Why a buried pallet is not a harmless pallet

It is tempting to assume that wood, being natural, does no harm when it ends up in a landfill. After all, wood breaks down. The problem is how it breaks down. Landfills are packed tight and starved of oxygen, and in those anaerobic conditions organic material like wood decomposes in a way that produces methane rather than simply returning carbon quietly to the soil.

That distinction matters enormously for the climate. Landfill methane from wood waste is not a rounding error. Methane traps far more heat than the same amount of carbon dioxide over a couple of decades, which means a modest volume of it does outsized damage. When a pallet made of stored atmospheric carbon rots anaerobically, some of that carbon is released in its most warming form.

This is the counterintuitive heart of the issue. The very material that looked climate-friendly while it stored carbon in a warehouse becomes a climate liability once it is buried and left to decompose without air. Diversion is how you avoid flipping that switch.

How much wood ends up buried

Wood and untreated lumber make up a meaningful share of what arrives at municipal and construction landfills. Pallets are a visible part of that stream, especially near distribution hubs, ports, and manufacturing corridors where they pile up faster than any single business can reuse them. Exact tonnages vary by region and reporting method, so treat any headline figure as an estimate.

What is not in dispute is the direction of the trend and the scale of the opportunity. Because pallets are relatively uniform, durable, and easy to collect in bulk, they are one of the more recoverable wood streams out there. A broken pallet is far easier to divert than a mixed load of construction debris. That recoverability is exactly why pallet diversion is such a practical climate lever.

When we talk with facilities managers, the surprise is usually not that pallets can be diverted, but how many were quietly going to landfill simply because no one had set up a pickup. The default path of least resistance is often the dumpster, and changing that default is where the real gains hide.

The diversion hierarchy for wood

Not all diversion is equal. There is a rough hierarchy of best-to-worst outcomes for a pallet that has reached the end of its current job, and understanding it helps you aim for the highest-value option available.

The order below moves from the most carbon-preserving choice to the least. The goal is always to climb as high on this ladder as the pallet's condition allows.

  • Reuse as-is: the pallet goes straight back into service, no processing needed.
  • Repair and reuse: a board or two is replaced and the pallet returns to circulation.
  • Remanufacture: usable components are combined into rebuilt pallets.
  • Recycle to mulch, animal bedding, or fiber: the wood serves a new purpose.
  • Biomass energy: the wood is burned for energy, which at least avoids methane.
  • Landfill: the worst outcome, and the one diversion exists to prevent.

Why methane avoidance is worth counting

When companies tally the benefits of a recycling program, they often focus on the recycled tonnage and stop there. Avoided landfill methane deserves its own line. Keeping wood out of anaerobic burial is not the same benefit as recycling a can; it specifically prevents the release of a high-potency greenhouse gas that would otherwise have happened.

This is one of the reasons wood diversion shows up favorably in emissions accounting even when the recycled material itself has modest value. The climate benefit is partly in what you make and partly in what you prevent. For sustainability reporting, both halves are legitimate, provided you describe them honestly and avoid double counting.

Some landfills capture a portion of their methane and use it for energy, which softens the picture but does not erase it. Capture systems are imperfect and never collect everything, so the safest climate strategy remains keeping decomposable wood out of the landfill in the first place.

Setting up diversion that actually works

The difference between a diversion program that thrives and one that quietly dies usually comes down to logistics, not intentions. If diverting pallets is harder than tossing them, the tossing wins. Successful programs make the sustainable choice the easy choice by placing collection points where pallets accumulate and scheduling reliable pickups before piles overflow.

It also helps to segregate pallets from contaminated or treated wood, because clean pallet stock is far more valuable and far easier to route to high-value reuse. A little sorting discipline at the dock pays off down the chain. Contamination is one of the main reasons otherwise recyclable wood gets downgraded.

The climate goal is to keep that carbon stored as long as possible and, when the pallet finally fails, to route the wood somewhere that does not slam-release its carbon as methane.

Framed that way, landfill is not just a waste-management failure, it is a carbon-release event. Diversion is not just tidy housekeeping, it is climate work. That reframing tends to change how seriously an organization treats its pallet stream, and it should.

The encouraging part is that this is one of the more tractable problems in corporate sustainability. Pallets are collectible, uniform, and valuable enough to move. Very few climate levers are as straightforward to pull as simply not burying the wood you already have.
