Where wood still wins — and we will say so
Plastic pallets carry a higher purchase price and a heavier upfront carbon load, which only pays off across many controlled cycles. In open supply chains where pallets get lost, or one-way shipments, recycled wood is cheaper and greener. We recommend whichever genuinely fits your loop.
Construction and material choices
Most plastic pallets are molded from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene (PP). HDPE is tougher and more impact- and cold-resistant, which suits freezer and rugged handling; PP is stiffer and takes higher temperatures, which suits hot-wash lines and steam sanitizing. Both are fully recyclable at end of life.
Manufacturing methods shape performance. Injection-molded pallets are precise and strong for racking and automation; structural-foam molds are rugged and economical; thermoformed pallets are the lightest and cheapest for nestable, display, and one-way uses. Some heavy-duty units are reinforced with steel or fiberglass rods to raise rack-load capacity.
Nestable designs stack into each other to save return-freight space, while rackable designs have a rigid base and often reinforcement for beam storage. Choosing the mold and design to match the job is where a plastic pallet earns its price.

Plastic pallets come in the same standard footprints as wood, most commonly 48x40, along with metric and specialty sizes. Weight varies widely with the design, from light thermoformed units around 15 pounds to heavy rackable pallets near 50 pounds. Lighter units cut shipping cost; heavier units carry more.
Load figures follow the usual three tiers. Dynamic capacity for a standard plastic 48x40 typically runs in the 2,000 to 3,000 pound range, static capacity is far higher for floor stacking, and rack capacity is the limiting figure, often 1,500 to 2,800 pounds depending on reinforcement. If you rack loaded plastic pallets, confirm the rack rating with us, because unreinforced plastic can sag under sustained load in a way wood does not.

Care, storage, and end-of-life recycling
Plastic pallets are low-maintenance: hose or wash them, inspect for cracks around the deck and legs, and pull any unit with a structural crack from service, since plastic fails suddenly rather than gradually like wood. Store them out of prolonged direct sun where possible, as UV can embrittle some grades over years unless the resin is UV-stabilized.
When a plastic pallet is finally retired, it is a clean, single-material stream that regrinds into new plastic goods rather than heading to landfill.
