Hardwood vs. Softwood: The Core Split
The first fork in pallet lumber is hardwood versus softwood, and the terms describe the tree type, not literally how hard the wood is. Hardwoods come from broadleaf, deciduous trees like oak, maple, and poplar. Softwoods come from conifers like pine, spruce, and fir. For pallets, the practical shorthand holds up well: hardwoods tend to be denser, stronger, and heavier, while softwoods tend to be lighter and cheaper.
That distinction drives most of what matters. A hardwood pallet generally carries more load and survives more rough cycles, at the cost of extra weight and money. A softwood pallet is lighter and less expensive, which is ideal when weight is billed or the pallet only needs to make one trip. Neither is superior in the abstract; each fits different jobs.
In practice, plenty of pallets are built from mixed hardwoods rather than a single named species, because recyclers and mills work with whatever sound lumber is available. Understanding the hardwood-softwood split gives you the vocabulary to spec what you actually need.

Oak: The Heavy-Duty Standard
Oak is the archetypal hardwood pallet material in much of North America, prized for its strength, stiffness, and resistance to abuse. An oak 48x40 can carry heavy loads and shrug off impacts that would splinter a lighter pallet, which is why oak dominates in industries shipping dense, heavy product like beverages, machinery, and building materials.
The trade-offs are weight and moisture. Oak is heavy, so an oak pallet adds meaningful tare weight to every shipment, and it starts out with high moisture that must be dried or heat-treated before the pallet stabilizes. Freshly built green-oak pallets can also stain product or leach tannins if they contact goods before drying, so drying matters for more than just weight.
For high-cycle, heavy-load, closed-loop systems, oak's durability is often worth its weight premium because the pallet survives more trips. When you need a pallet to take a beating and keep working, oak and similar dense hardwoods are the reliable answer.
Pine and Softwoods: Light and Economical
Southern yellow pine and other softwoods build lighter, cheaper pallets that excel at one-way and weight-sensitive shipping. When a pallet only has to make a single journey to a customer who will not return it, paying for heavy oak is wasted money, and a clean pine pallet does the job for less. The lower tare weight can also directly reduce freight cost.
Softwoods are easier to nail and machine, and they dry faster than dense hardwoods, which speeds heat treatment for export. Their main limitation is durability: a softwood pallet is more prone to board breakage and nail pull-through under heavy or repeated loads, so it is less suited to high-cycle closed loops carrying dense product.
Softwood also tends to present a cleaner, lighter-colored surface, which some retail and consumer-facing shippers prefer for appearance. If your loads are moderate, your trips are few, and weight or cost is tight, softwood is frequently the smarter buy.
Weight, Cost, and Freight Impact
Every pound of pallet is a pound you pay to ship, so species choice quietly affects freight bills. An empty hardwood 48x40 might weigh in the neighborhood of 50 to 70 pounds, while a comparable softwood build can run noticeably lighter. Across a full trailer of pallets, that difference adds up in fuel, LTL weight breaks, and air or parcel charges.
Cost at purchase follows the same logic. Hardwood lumber generally costs more than softwood, so hardwood pallets carry a higher sticker price. The right way to weigh this is per trip and per shipment: a heavier, pricier hardwood pallet that survives many cycles can be cheaper overall than a light pallet you replace constantly.
For sustainability, lighter pallets mean lower transport emissions, but longer-lasting pallets mean fewer pallets built. The greenest choice depends on your cycle count, which is exactly the kind of trade-off we can help you model if you share your shipping pattern.
Species and Export Compliance
For international shipping, species matters less than treatment. ISPM-15 requires that solid-wood packaging be heat-treated to a core temperature of 56 degrees Celsius for at least 30 minutes, or fumigated, and stamped accordingly, regardless of whether the wood is oak or pine. Both hardwood and softwood pallets can be made export-compliant; the wood just has to be treated and marked.
That said, species affects how a pallet takes treatment. Softwoods generally dry and heat-treat faster and more evenly, which can make them convenient for export programs, while dense hardwoods take longer to reach core temperature. Neither is disqualified; the timing and cost of treatment simply differ.
One important note: ISPM-15 applies to solid-wood packaging. If your pallet contains any bark or is built from green, untreated wood, it must go through proper treatment before it can cross borders. When in doubt on an export lane, confirm the stamp and the treatment, not just the species.
Choosing the Right Species for Your Job
Reduce the decision to three questions: how heavy are your loads, how many trips must the pallet survive, and how much does weight cost you. Heavy loads and many trips point to oak and dense hardwoods. Light loads, few trips, and weight-sensitive freight point to pine and softwoods. Mixed-hardwood recycled stock is a strong middle ground for general shipping.
Do not over-index on species alone. A well-built softwood pallet can outperform a poorly built hardwood one, and construction quality, board thickness, and nailing pattern all interact with species to determine real-world durability. Species is one lever among several.
