Two Philosophies of Support

Every wood pallet has to lift a load off the ground and give a forklift something to grab. Stringer and block pallets answer that challenge with two different structural philosophies. A stringer pallet uses long horizontal boards, called stringers, running the length of the pallet to support the top deck. A block pallet uses small solid blocks, usually nine of them, as the load-bearing supports between the top and bottom decks.

That single design decision cascades into everything else: how forklifts enter, how much the pallet weighs, how it behaves in racking, and how easily it can be repaired. Neither design is universally better. They are optimized for different priorities, and understanding those priorities is the fastest way to a correct buying decision.

In North America, stringer pallets historically dominate because the 48x40 GMA pallet is a stringer design. In Europe and in modern automated warehouses, block pallets are far more common. Both worlds are converging as automation spreads, so it pays to know both.

How Forklifts and Jacks Enter

The most visible difference is entry. A basic stringer pallet is a two-way pallet: forks can only enter from the two ends where the stringers create openings. To let forks enter from all four sides, manufacturers cut notches into the stringers, creating a 'partial four-way' pallet. Partial four-way means full-height forklift entry on two sides and shallower, notch-limited entry on the other two.

A block pallet is a true four-way pallet. Because the load rests on discrete blocks rather than continuous stringers, there are full openings on all four sides for both forklift tines and pallet-jack wheels. That matters enormously in tight, fast-moving warehouses where operators cannot always approach a pallet from a preferred direction.

The distinction is not academic. A pallet jack rolling into the notched side of a partial four-way stringer pallet can catch or ride up on the stringer, while a block pallet accepts the jack cleanly from any face. In high-throughput environments, that difference alone can justify block construction.

  • Stringer, unnotched: two-way entry (forklift ends only)
  • Stringer, notched: partial four-way (full entry two sides, notch entry two sides)
  • Block: true four-way (full entry and jack access on all four sides)

Durability and Repairability

Stringer pallets have a well-known weak point: the notch. Because the notch removes wood from the stringer exactly where a fork tine bears, stringers tend to crack there, especially after rough handling. The upside is that a cracked stringer can be repaired by nailing a 'companion' or 'sister' board alongside it, which is a fast, cheap fix and a big reason recycled stringer pallets are so economical.

Block pallets have no notches to crack and generally distribute load more evenly, so many buyers find them more durable over repeated cycles. The trade-off is that when a block or block-and-board connection does fail, the repair is more involved than slapping on a companion board. Block pallets also tend to use more lumber, making them heavier and often stronger but pricier.

For high-cycle, closed-loop systems where pallets are expected to survive dozens of trips, block construction's durability often pays for itself. For lower-cycle or one-way shipping, the cheap-to-repair stringer pallet usually wins on total cost.

Weight, Cost, and Material Use

Stringer pallets generally use less wood than comparable block pallets, so they weigh less and cost less to build. Lower weight can matter for air and parcel freight where every pound is billed, and lower cost matters for any operation buying pallets by the thousand. This is a major reason the North American recycled market is dominated by inexpensive stringer 48x40s.

Block pallets carry more lumber in those nine blocks and their heavier deck framing, raising both weight and price. In exchange you get strength and four-way access. From a sustainability angle, more wood per pallet is not automatically worse if the block pallet lasts far more trips, because environmental footprint is best measured per shipment, not per pallet.

The right lens is cost and impact per trip. A slightly pricier block pallet that survives 40 trips can beat a cheap stringer pallet that survives 15, both financially and environmentally. Ask us to model your expected trip count and we can show which design lowers your cost per shipment.

Automation and Conveyor Fit

Automated storage and retrieval systems, robotic shuttles, and powered conveyors are increasingly picky about pallet geometry, and this is where block pallets shine. Their consistent block layout and true four-way openings give automation predictable, repeatable pick points, and their flush bottom-board arrangement rides conveyors smoothly. Many warehouse automation vendors specify block pallets outright.

Stringer pallets can work in automation, but their continuous bottom stringers and notch geometry create edge cases that conveyors and robots handle less gracefully. A protruding or split bottom board on a stringer pallet is more likely to jam a line. If you are automating, the pallet is not a place to cut corners on consistency.

The practical guidance: if robots or high-speed conveyors touch your pallets, lean block and lean toward tight dimensional tolerances. If humans on forklifts handle everything, stringer pallets remain a rugged, economical default.

Choosing Between Them

Start with your handling reality. If you need four-way jack and fork access, run automation, or expect many reuse cycles, block pallets are worth the premium. If you ship domestically with human forklift operators and want the lowest cost per pallet with easy repairs, stringer pallets are hard to beat.

Then layer in your return logistics. Closed-loop systems where pallets come back reward the durability of block designs, while one-way and low-cycle shipping rewards the cheap repairability of stringers. Export adds an ISPM-15 requirement to either design but does not by itself dictate which construction to use.
