The Problem With Half-Empty Trucks

A truck that runs loaded in one direction and empty in the other is one of the most expensive things in freight. The carrier still pays for the fuel, the driver, the tolls, and the wear on that empty return leg, and those costs are baked into the rate they quote you whether you see them itemized or not. This is the deadhead problem, and pallets are unusually exposed to it.

Pallets are exposed because they are a low-value, high-volume commodity that moves in dedicated flows. New pallets come from a supplier to your dock. Empty cores accumulate at your dock and need to go somewhere. If those two flows are handled by separate trips, you are paying for empty miles twice, once on each side of each transaction.

Every empty mile is a mile you paid for and got nothing back. The entire discipline of backhaul routing exists to make sure that when a truck has to go somewhere anyway, it carries something useful on the return.

What Backhaul Actually Means

A backhaul is freight that fills a truck's return trip after it has delivered its primary load. If a truck brings a load of recycled pallets to your facility and then leaves empty, that empty leg is pure waste. If instead it leaves loaded with your accumulated cores, the carrier earns revenue in both directions and can price the whole trip lower.

For a pallet program, the cleanest backhaul is the pallet loop itself. Delivered pallets go out to your production lines, get used, and the empties come back to the dock. A recycler who delivers graded units and hauls cores on the same truck is running a natural backhaul, and that efficiency shows up in your rate.

The key word is coordination. Backhaul only works when the timing, volume, and location of the outbound freight line up with the return trip. That is a scheduling and data problem more than a trucking problem.

  • Headhaul: the primary, revenue-generating leg of a trip.
  • Backhaul: the return leg, ideally also loaded to avoid deadheading.
  • Deadhead: an empty leg with no revenue, whose cost gets spread onto your rate.

Consider a simple round trip between your dock and a recycling yard. If a carrier runs it as two separate one-way jobs, you effectively pay for two loaded legs and two empty returns spread across the trips. Combine them into one delivery-plus-pickup and you have eliminated an entire deadhead leg from the equation.

That eliminated leg is not a rounding error. On a regional lane, the return trip can represent a large fraction of the total trip cost. Removing it can shave a real percentage off your combined pallet logistics bill, and because pallet flows are continuous, that saving repeats every single cycle.

The savings compound with distance and frequency. A daily loop over a hundred-mile lane saves far more per year than a monthly loop over twenty miles, so the lanes worth optimizing first are your highest-frequency, longest-distance pallet flows.

Why Geography and a Local Yard Matter

Backhaul economics improve dramatically when the recycling yard sits inside your existing freight geography. If your cores have to travel two hundred miles to reach a recycler, the backhaul savings get eaten by the distance. If the yard is thirty miles away and on the way to somewhere your trucks already go, the numbers get excellent.

It should not, if the loop is scheduled to your rhythm. A single coordinated truck stop is usually less disruptive than two separate ones, because your dock team handles the swap once instead of twice.
