GMA stands for the Grocery Manufacturers Association, the trade group that originally standardized the 48x40-inch wood pallet so that grocery and consumer-goods supply chains could interchange freight without re-palletizing at every dock. When people say 'GMA pallet,' they almost always mean the 48-inch by 40-inch footprint with a specific deck-board and stringer layout that became the de facto norm. The association itself has since merged into other organizations, but the name stuck to the pallet the way 'Kleenex' stuck to tissue.

The reason the 48x40 became dominant is boringly practical: it fits two-across in a standard 96-inch-wide trailer or ocean container with minimal wasted floor space, and it matches the footprint of a standard grocery case count. Dimensions and Anatomy

A textbook 48x40 GMA pallet is 48 inches along the stringers (the length dimension, which is the leading number by convention) and 40 inches across the deck boards. Overall height is typically around 5.5 to 6.3 inches, driven mostly by the 1.5-inch nominal stringer height plus top and bottom deck boards. The most common configuration is a stringer pallet with a partial four-way entry: forklifts enter freely from the 40-inch ends and through notches cut into the 48-inch sides.

The classic top deck uses seven boards: leading and trailing boards that are usually wider (often around 5.5 inches) and five interior boards that are narrower (often around 3.5 inches), spaced to spread load and let pallet jacks and racks engage cleanly. The bottom deck typically carries fewer boards, with a wider lead board on each end so the pallet rides safely on floor conveyors and pallet-jack wheels.

The three stringers are the structural spine. On a partial four-way pallet, the two outer stringers and the center stringer each get a notch, and the quality and cleanness of those notches is a common failure point. A notch that is cut too deep or splits along the grain weakens the pallet exactly where a fork tine bears against it.

A 'Grade B' or '#2' pallet has been repaired, which may mean replaced deck boards, added companion stringers, or plugged notches. Below that sit repair-core and scrap grades that are either candidates for rebuilding or headed for grinding into mulch and biomass.
